Why is my ferret’s fur shedding?
My ferret Nemesis is pretty old (probably 10 or 11 years old). His fur started shedding from his back close to his tail and its moving towards his head. His tail is not shedding. He is always itchy and now his bare skin shows that he has small scabs (he didn’t have them when he first started shedding). He also has a black spot on his skin that looks like melanoma. He has lost weight (he was fat to begin with so he is not underweight). His fur looks dull and unhealthy. I will take him to the vet ASAP, but does anyone have any idea what this could be?
although it doesn’t usually involve small scabs, adrenal disease is the first thing that comes to mind.
a vet check is certainly in order for this old boy. have them run a bloodwork panel at the exam too to check how he’s doing internally. it should show if he’s fighting something like an infection, lymphoma or insulinoma as well.
